The medieval village of Mas d’Azil
On the cours de l’Arize , the Mas d’Azil is an old medieval bastide remarkable for its half-timbered houses, its 15th century stone bridge, its church with a bulbous bell tower and its Louis-XIV fountain. The territory of the Mas d’Azil shelters exceptional natural sites, among which the lake of Filheit, ideal for hiking, and the famous cave of the Mas d’Azil, famous geological site in Ariège. The cave is of extraordinary dimensions.
Its natural tunnel of more than 400 meters long is even crossed by a road. Not to be missed also, the museum of prehistory located in the village is not to be missed to discover the archeological treasures of the Magdalenian discovered in the cave. At Mas d’Azil is also the site of Xploria, the “time forest” populated by dinosaurs. The Cave of Mas d’Azil
A geological jewel, the Mas d’Azil cave is a natural site that cannot be ignored in Ariège. Its visit amazes and fascinates people of all ages. A natural tunnel crossed by a river, the Mas d’Azil cave is also home to prehistoric remains that testify to the occupation of the site for thousands of years.
The visit of the cave continues to the Museum of Prehistory located 800 meters away, to discover the collections of objects and carved tools discovered by archaeologists in the depths of the cave. The cave and its museum are open all year round. The entrance fee includes the visit of the cave and the museum.
It amounts to 9 euros for adults, 6.90 euros for students, 5.5 euros for children and young people from 5 to 17 years old. The visit of the museum alone is offered at the price of 4.50 euros full price and 3 euros for children up to 17 years old. Admission to both sites is free for children under the age of 5.
