Today integrated into Val-de-Sos, the Ariège village of Vicdessos has a rich heritage built which testifies to its long history. In particular, its 14th century walls, the remains of its 12th century castle, a medieval church from the 11th century with a remarkable square Romanesque bell tower, and numerous 15th and 16th century buildings and mansions.
A prosperous town from the Renaissance, Vicdessos is then populated by craftsmen and merchants. It used to host an important cattle fair at the end of the summer period, when the animals came down from the high pastures. The village was built on the course of the Vicdessos River. At the foot of the Massif of Montcalm, its territory is rich in several exceptional natural sites, such as the Caraoucou waterfalls and the ponds of Peyregrand, Neych or Brouquenat.
